Christmas is over but where is the exercise

So the holidays are behind us, but the exercise has not made a return appearance as of yet. My latest excuse is a lack of space. But, it really is a good one. About the only place in the house to find the room to do floor exercise is in the living room. The problem is we still have our tree up. And it is a HUGE tree (at least in terms of the available space). We usually have it up from the first week of December until the first or second week in January. So it will be heading the three shredder in the next 10 days or so and I will have the open space to get started back on my daily exercise. With my most recent project behind me and the holidays fading fast, I am actually looking forward to getting the new year started off right. I think If I can get myself into a daily routine, I should be able to drop a few more pounds each month and make it a little easier to get to my next goal quicker.

What Excercise?

Well I have completely and totally slacked off in the exercise department. The fact is that as much as I know I have to, I am just having problems regaining my focus to do the exercises each morning. I lost the focus when I started working on my current project and have not really ever recovered from that even though I could now fit it in each morning despite the ongoing work on the project. I would like to say that I will be starting up again with the exercises tomorrow, but I just don’t see it happening. I am full of excuses lately too. With the upcoming holidays and the work I need to get done I just don’t see the time or the initiative being available. At this point I don’t see myself exercising regularly again until after the Christmas holiday. At this point I am not really as concerned about the exercise. I am more interested in focusing on eating better. I do realize that I will need to start exercising if I plan on meeting my long-term goal. But, at this point I am able to loose weight simply by eating better without actually having to “workout” each day. The proof is in the fact that I currently weigh 30 pounds less than when I started.

Nothing new…

I am still deep into this project, so I have not been exercising each morning. Come next Monday I am going to take time each morning whether I have it or not so I can get back on track with the pilates exercises. I was feeling better when I was getting those stretching exercises in each morning.

Time restraints

I am now in the thick of things with my current work project and it has been tough to focus on anything else. I have been spending 18 hours a day working on code for this porject and I have found it tough to make time for much else. So, I have not been doing the exercises this week like I should be. I am hoping to be at a point in a week or so that I can make time for toher things besides this project. I know I should be able to take 30 minutes to do the pilates exercises each day, but I literally wake and work and spend the day working at the computer untill I cant go any longer, then sleep.

This is for the dogs…

Literally. This morning I was doing my exercises and our basset hound decided he would lay down next to me on his back and join in. It was pretty funny to see. For the most part I put him outside in the morning when I do these exercises but today he was sleeping when I started so I just let him be. Guess he wants to get in shape with pilates too.

So far so good

Well, even though I haven’t ventured further than the basic principles of pilates, things have gone well so far. I am enjoying the time spent each morning stretching and practicing my breathing. The session on the video only lasts for abotu 10 minutes or so, but I have extended that to about 30 minutes by adding in more of the stretches and exercises.

Starting with the basic principles

I have finally started using my pilates video. It is well put together and has a lot of great workouts on it ranging from 15 minutes to 60+ minutes with all kinds of levels of dificulty as well. There is a really good intro which covers the basic principles of pilates. I think I will stick with that for the time being until I get the hang of this.

Motivational problems

Seems like I am having problems getting the motivation to get started with the exercises. I have yeat to start. I want to, it is just that once I get my son off to school in the morning, I get right to work because of the project that needs to be done I feel pressed into getting that done rather than spend some time working out. I need to get myself to take an hour each morning as an investment into future health. Easier said than done.

Pilates. Let the stretching begin…

After figuring out that I am not just going to be able to start walking 45 minutes each day I decided to look for some stretching exercises and came across some information on Pilates. I started reading and it looked like some darn good exercises to help get and stay in shape and keep fit. It also looked damn hard and not like something I could do. But, after some looking and digging. I came up with a DVD that claims it offers complete Pilates workouts for inflexible people. I put my order in and a the DVD arrived yesterday. It looks promising with a range of workouts that go from 10 minutes to 60 minutes with varied purposes. I am going to try and spend time each morning after getting the kids off to school doing some of these exercises. I figured that would be the best time since no one else will be around except for the dog and the cats. It will be interesting to see how they react to me stretching out across the living room floor. I am hoping to start with the smaller 10 minute sessions and work my way up to an hour a day each day during the week. Hopefully It will help in my mobility and before long I will be taking a daily walk with the family in the evening. It should be an interesting journey.

Just Do It. Kind of…

One of my biggest problems throughout life has been that I hate to do things that require a lot of physical activity on my part. I have never really been much for sports, other than watching football on Sunday afternoon. If I had the option of walking or driving, I would drive. I have just always hated moving. Which is very much a part of why I am so big. That being said, I have realized that if I want to lose weight, I need to get off my ass and start to exercise and include exercise and physical activity in my day to day life. Otherwise I might lose some weight.. but without being mobile and more active, it will just come back.

The most frequent suggested form of exercise, at least in my case, has been to simply start walking. Forty five minutes to an hour each day should help in getting fit is what I have been told. My problem with that is walking kills me. Because of the fact that I sit at my desk all day long, sometimes until I fall asleep working, and the size of me; I find it hard to walk more than 100 feet at a time. My back and hip seem to be a serious issue because I have been so inactive for the last several years.

Still, I need to start moving and walking is one of the cheapest and best exercises there is. So, I figure maybe if I start slow and work my way up I can get to the 45 minutes a day or maybe even more. My plan is to start out with daily stretching for 30 minutes each morning after getting the kids off to school. Also, there is this old exercise machine out in the garage that his been collecting dust for the past two years. My girlfriend picked it up at a rummage sale with the best of intentions and we just let it sit. It is a rather odd contraption that probably doesn’t do much to help you lose weight. But it seems as though it will at least help me get moving and stretch me out a little, which is what I’m after. Off to the garage I go.
