A month later. Not much difference.

Today was my return visit with the nutritionist. I haven’t written much in the last few weeks. I have been busy with work and slightly discouraged at the fact that things have been harder this time around. My weigh in today put me at 2 pounds less than my visit last month and the past two weekly weigh-ins have showed no change from the last one I posted a dew weeks back. I haven’t stuck to the walks on a daily basis. Although I am still taking them, a few issues have made it difficult to stay with them every day. The first being the weather. The town I live in must never have heard of snow plows. When we get snow, it stays on half of the roads until it is gone. Makes me wonder why it is I pay taxes. Another issue has been my back. I have been having problems with my back for years. I finally had some X-rays last February to figure out what was going on. I always figured it was just from being a fat ass that caused the pain and once I started losing weight, it would diminish. Was I wrong. I found out that I have an issue with my lower back called Lumbar Spondylolisthesis. Here is the information from my doctor about it.

Your lower back is called your lumbar spine. It is made up of five bones called lumbar vertebrae. The vertebrae have two major parts, a solid part called the body and a bony ring through which the lower part of the spinal cord and nerves travel. Between the bodies of the vertebrae is shock absorbing material called disks. Part of the ring of each vertebra, called the pars, touches the vertebra above it and the vertebra below it.

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a break in both sides of the ring of a vertebrae allows the body of the vertebra to slip forward. Spondylolisthesis most commonly occur at the fourth or fifth lumbar vertebrae. These conditions are also called pars defects, pars stress fractures, or stress fractures. Spondylolisthesis results from repetitive extension of the back (bending backward). This causes weakness in the rings of the lumbar vertebrae, eventually leading to a break (fracture) in a ring. Less commonly, these conditions may result from an injury to the back. Some health care providers feel that certain people are born with weak vertebral rings.

So, basically it resulted from being a fat ass and any number of other things. But, isn’t going away with the weight that has left so far. All I know is that sometimes (i.e. Lately) it hurts like hell. The last few weeks have really been rough because of it. If I manage to go for a walk. I’m hurting before I get halfway done and for a good bit afterwards. The doctor gave me a prescription for pain meds, but I do my best not to take them because I hate the thought of becoming dependent on the pharma companies to get me through my every day life. My grandmother takes like 22 different pills and she still feels like crap. They give her one pill to fix one thing and it causes something else, so then she needs a pill to fix that, etc… So, in any case. I haven’t been walking as much as I was hoping to when last month started so exercise has declined. I have been doing well with my diet, although I still haven’t started tracking calories. That is my goal for this month. To get back into the daily calorie counting and keeping a close eye on everything I eat. I am also trying to add some more veggies and salads. When I first started on my journey, I was eating a lot of fresh veggies. I haven’t been doing that as much lately and I think it might be part of what’s making things harder.

After my visit to the Dr. today, I took a trip to the store for some groceries and bought a ton of fresh veggies. Tons of fresh lettuce. The kind in a bag with all different kinds of lettuces. Cucumbers, broccoli, green peppers, red beets, peas, tomatoes and a few other things. I’m going to try and have fresh stuff every day for lunch and see where that takes me. I also got my resting metabolic rate checked while at my appointment and wrote a post about that here.

So, in all.. it hasn’t been the start to a new beginning I had hoped for and although I am a bit discouraged. I have not thrown in the towel and plan to fight a litte
