Eating Habits Change

I have been trying to get an overall picture of what I have been doing as far as modifying my eating habits, so I can try and do more of what has worked to this point. So far, I have made some big changes in my eating habits which include:

No more ice cream – this was a big one for me. I really like ice cream. Almost to a fault. I would eat way more than any single person should eat in one sitting. In all honesty, I haven’t really missed it to this point. But it is winter. I usually get the craving for ice cream in the summer, so we will see how it goes in 6 months.

No more junk food – with the exception of having a handful or two of chips when we get cheese steaks or subs. Now some might say cheese steaks or subs are junk food. But, I will never give them up. Even if it means I will always be 25 pounds heavier than my target weight. If you don’t understand this, you have never had a good cheese steak. But, this does not mean I will be eating one every week. I will be eating less of them.

No more candy. I haven’t had any candy since Halloween. Even then, it was just a few small pieces form the huge bags that the kids brought home.

More Fruit. I have been eating a lot more fruit and trying to make sure I eat fruit every day. We used to buy fruit and not even touch it. We would throw some away every week. Now it is next to impossible to keep it in the house since we have all started eating it. I have been eating all kinds of fruit including: apples, pears, oranges, grapefruit, cantaloupe, bananas and other fruits. I find that bananas make a great snack.

More fresh veggies and salad. Broccoli, cucumber, carrots, green peppers and others. When I am hungry and not in the mood for fruit, I make a salad. Pile on the veggies and even a few olives and croutons (can’t have a salad without olives and croutons!).Makes for a great meal and usually hits the spot. Even If I end up being hungry 2 hours later, the salad didn’t add a ton of calories . So, I can grab a piece of fruit or two and it will pull me through to the next meal. Beats going for a bag of chips or a pack of cookies.

Juice is almost non-existent. The only juice I drink anymore is veggie juice. I like the low sodium V8 juice. It has only 50 calories per serving and tastes great. I have a couple glasses each week with one or two of my meals. The only other time I have any kind of juice is when we are out to eat at a restaurant. I try and get a juice type drink instead of soda. Then it is water, all day long. At least 4 to 6 1Pint bottles.

We have also been trying to make better choices with the foods we buy at the grocery store. Now we look for low-fat and low calorie options of the foods we like to eat. So far I have found a good alternative salad dressing with wishbone low fat Italian dressing and a good lower calorie bread from Pepperidge farm. The bread is also higher in fiber and fiber intake is something else we have been trying to improve. We have also found some tasty whole grain bagels and a few other foods.
